How many outfits are enough?

Issue # 10

Hi Reader,

We're on the 10th issue of The Friday Fit, can you believe it? Today, I'm bringing in a great question from the community that you might be wondering about, too.

After last week's email, K asked:

"How many outfits do you generally have for a day? How many total outfits do you recommend that folks have?"

Here's my take:

The number of outfits I recommend in a day depends totally on your lifestyle.

What does your typical day look like?

If you work from home and have a dog, perhaps all you need is one lounge outfit with the option of outerwear and walking shoes.

If you go to a yoga studio, work in the office, have happy hour with coworkers, then have a side hustle on the weekends - your number of outfits will reflect the frequency of the change in your environment.

HOWEVER, it doesn't mean you need a completely different outfit for each activity. It could mean a matter of switching out your shoes and styling your hair or makeup a different way to match the scene.

The Inspired Fit

K shared this fun video about why Victorian women changed clothes 5 times a day. She found this at a time when she was struggling with figuring out what to wear for all the things in her day.

While we may not be switching into multiple gowns these days, the lifestyle activities Adelaide represents in the video are essentially the same as what we do now - lounging, going out to town, housework. The change of outfits isn't so much about flaunting your riches - it's mostly for function so you can move through your daily activities with comfort and practicality.

The takeaway

How does all of this play into how you document your outfits to analyze your own style?

If you have a simpler lifestyle, then document your outfits for at least 30 days to capture different events over a longer period of time. If you have a quick paced lifestyle, 14 days is likely enough.

What I wouldn't want you to do is change outfits for the sake of changing outfits or meeting an arbitrary quota of outfit changes that day. There's no rule besides what you set it to be :)

Next week, we'll be analyzing your current lifestyle and how well your closet is representing your current needs. This is where we begin to see some major breakthroughs.

Stay tuned!
