Decluttering your closet won't make you more stylish

Issue #4

Happy Friday, Reader!

This week, I'm diving into how I'm revamping my own wardrobe using the exact process I use with clients.

It's been a few years since I've audited my entire wardrobe, and it's time to freshen up my personal style.

Why now? I'm going through transitions in my life that my clients tend to experience:

  • I'm in a new stage of business and I want my wardrobe to reflect that
  • My body has changed and I'm finding styles and silhouettes that fit my current body better
  • My lifestyle needs more functional clothing so I want to find better quality replacements

The one thing I'm NOT doing to start this journey

When people tell me they want to work on their personal style, they'll tell me how overwhelming their closet is and they need a massive declutter.

If you haven't heard this before, let me be the first to tell you:

Decluttering your closet doesn't make you more stylish.

The biggest mistake I see when people want to feel better in their clothes, is they purge their closet of what doesn't fit, is outdated, or they don't like anymore.

Here's why starting with your closet doesn't work:

  • You're going into your closet without a goal of what you want your style to even look like
  • You're keeping and letting go of pieces based on emotion, not logic. When you don't have a strategy of what to keep or toss, you'll either keep a lot of things that'll stay in your closet for 5 more years to come without knowing why or end up with a closet of 3 pieces because you literally hated everything.
  • You'll feel unsatisfied after decluttering your closet, because you're going to look at it thinking "I have no clothes!" You'll feel the immediate urge to go fill it up again with clothes you don't even know will work...repeating the cycle again.

That's why I won't be starting with my closet in this wardrobe revamp journey.

The REAL first step of my wardrobe revamp

I start by setting goals and intentions first before even thinking about what to do with my closet.

I've explained why I want this wardrobe revamp for myself - now what do I want to get out of this experience?

My goals for my wardrobe revamp

  1. I'd like to find more quality work-from-home basics that are also cat friendly. I have 2 fluffy cats, Bao and Iroh, and I want to enjoy their cuddles. We've had them for 2 years and I've noticed that I need to wear more durable fabrics without me worrying about the cats roughing them up.
  2. I'd like to update the silhouettes of my basics so they complement my current body shape. I've been working out more in the last year and I'm noticing slight changes in my body. Nothing drastic, but enough to experiment with how fabric drapes over my body. More on this later in the process!
  3. I'd like to add more fun details that complement the basics I already own. I want to incorporate more accessories to create more versatility in my wardrobe without adding too many more clothes. This is my way of sharing how you don't need a lot to have a fun wardrobe!

By setting these goals upfront, I stay focused on the specific outcomes I want from this wardrobe revamp without feeling overwhelmed or distracted.

Next week is a 5th Friday of the month, so I'll be back with another deep dive into how I'm revamping my wardrobe.

In the meantime, when's the last time you've decluttered your closet? How was your experience? I'd love to know.

Issue # 10 Hi Reader, We're on the 10th issue of The Friday Fit, can you believe it? Today, I'm bringing in a great question from the community that you might be wondering about, too. After last week's email, K asked: "How many outfits do you generally have for a day? How many total outfits do you recommend that folks have?" Here's my take: The number of outfits I recommend in a day depends totally on your lifestyle. What does your typical day look like? If you work from home and have a dog,...

Issue #1 Hi Reader, Happy New Year! I hope you wrapped up 2024 exactly how you wanted to. We hosted dinner and made Gordon Ramsay's Beef Wellington for friends. We actually visited his Hell's Kitchen restaurant the weekend prior and, well, my husband says our homemade version is better 😆 So, I'd say we had a successful evening going into 2025. I know this time of year we're in the spirit of setting new goals. What's a goal you've set for yourself? Simply click "reply" to this email - I'd love...
