Repeat after me: Clothes are meant to fit my body, not the other way around

Issue #1

Hi Reader,

Happy New Year! I hope you wrapped up 2024 exactly how you wanted to. We hosted dinner and made Gordon Ramsay's Beef Wellington for friends. We actually visited his Hell's Kitchen restaurant the weekend prior and, well, my husband says our homemade version is better 😆 So, I'd say we had a successful evening going into 2025.

I know this time of year we're in the spirit of setting new goals. What's a goal you've set for yourself? Simply click "reply" to this email - I'd love to know!

One of my goals was to start an email newsletter to share with those who want to be more intentional about their personal style. So here we are ✨

Welcome to the first issue of The Friday Fit!

Let's dive right in.

The Body Fit

Today's theme is about dressing for your body's features and recognizing that what you look best in will be unique to you.

Repeat after me: Clothes are meant to fit my body, not the other way around.

Let's look at jeans as an example.

I liked the idea of this mom jean because I thought they would highlight my natural softness. However, the way they hug my hips and thighs makes me look thicker than I'd like to appear. The gathering of the fabric at my knees also makes it look a bit sloppy.

I like the way these straight jeans fit on me. They're a relaxed fit yet they create a cleaner look that's more streamlined from my hips all the way down to my leg.

Instead of forcing myself to fit into the mom jean style just because I like the style, I lean into the straight jean knowing that I like how it fits on my specific body.

With countless styles of jeans available today, you can explore which rises, lengths, and cuts work best for your body. If a jean you like doesn't fit, there's bound to be one that does.

The Inspired Fit

I used to find style inspiration and try to copy what they wore, wondering why I always looked off. That's because I didn't take into account how the women wearing the clothes had completely different body types than me.

I always gravitated toward styles that look beautiful on more angular bone structures. However, my body is naturally on the softer side and that will never change (that's a topic for another day).

Instead of putting myself down for not looking like my inspiration, I like to pull from these sources and adjust them to my own body's features.

I adore Elodie Romy's French chic looks. She looks balanced with this roomy cape coat because she's highlighting her length through her tall boots and shorter skirt. While the coat has a lot of extra weight and fabric, we still see her narrow frame through her legs.

If I were to interpret this look onto myself, I'd go for a longer cape coat, a longer straight skirt, and slim ankle boots. Since I'm shorter, having a coat hit at my hips would cut me off and make me appear even shorter. I'd want to elongate all the lengths on myself to look more proportionate.

How would you interpret this look on you?

The Overall Fit

Personal style isn't really about the clothes - it's about how you take care of yourself overall.

Growing up, I was obsessed with figuring out my style and looking good. It wasn't until I stopped relying on clothes to make me feel good and started taking better care of my body from the inside, that I felt more confident to then use style as a way to celebrate who I was vs using it as a mask.

I'm currently on week 2 of a 6-week gym program. It's my first time doing 4 days of strength training per week and I'm excited to see where it takes me.

Are you working on a fitness goal? Let me know!
